FAQs

General FAQs

  1. How do I get started as a seller?

Click the Sign Up button, create a profile and start to list the books you have at home. It costs nothing until you make a sale.

Remember to take clear pictures and let buyers know the condition of your books. It really is that simple.

Read our selling guide here for more details on the selling process.

  2. How do I get paid when I sell?

When you make a sale, the buyer’s funds are transferred to you via our payments processor, Stripe. Stripe will hold onto the payment until the book has been delivered.

  3. Who pays for shipping?

Buyers pay for shipping. Sellers should include a shipping cost on each listing - remember the lower the shipping cost, the more attractive it will be to buyers.

See here our handy shipping guide to low cost shipping here.

  4. What are Your Book Store’s fees?

It is free to sign up and to list any book for sale on Your Book Store.

When you sell a book, we charge a 20% sales fee with a minimum value per transaction of 30p. This ensures we can keep running the platform, cover our costs, and add lots of amazing features in the future!

  5. Taxes

Selling your personal items is not taxed. In the UK, if the money you make on Your Book Store over a year is less than you paid for the items, then you pay no tax.

The only time an individual item might be taxable is when you sell it for more than £6,000 and there is a profit on the sale (i.e. it sells for a higher price than you paid for it). We are not expecting this to apply to any items on Your Book Store!

UK law requires us to provider sellers’ information to HMRC. If you make a certain amount of sales on Your Book Store, you’ll need to complete a seller report for HMRC - this doesn’t mean there’s an obligation to pay taxes on your sales. We will contact you if we think that you fall into this category.

Business sellers trading for profit may need to pay tax on sales or provide any proof of their items’ value to HMRC. If you are a business selling on Your Book Store please ensure you account for tax in accordance with your accountant’s advice and usual business practices.

  6. Will I get my money back if a seller never ships the book?

Of course! if the seller never ships the book to you, we will refund the full price paid, including shipping.

  7. Is Your Book Store responsible for things bought and sold on the platform?

Your Book Store is an online peer-to-peer marketplace that connects buyers and sellers. Both buyers and sellers are responsible for things sold on Your Book Store.

We are here to provide the platform for buying and selling, to create a community of book lovers and try to help sort things out in case of issues. We are not responsible for items that are bought or sold on the website.

  1. What do the listing conditions mean?

We have a standard guide on what each condition below. Please note that this is subjective, and what one person may see as “Excellent” might be “Good” to someone else. Please review all photos of an item and message the seller if you have any questions before buying.

If you receive a book that does not match the condition listed, please contact us at support@yourbookstore.co.uk as soon as possible.

Condition Guide

New - The book has not been used or read since being bought. The book is brand new.

Excellent - The book has been read but you can’t really tell! There’s no spine cracks and no other signs of reading. Almost new.

Good - The book has been read and has some signs of reading but it has been well looked after.

Used - The book has been read and you can see this. It may have spine cracks and some folded page corners. A well loved book. The condition will not impact the reading experience.

Very Used - The book has been loved and read. It has spine cracks, dog-eared pages and it shows. Note that this is the poorest condition we expect the books to come in.

3. What forms of payment can I use?

We use our payment processor Stripe for all payments on Your Book Store. Stripe keeps all your banking details secure and is one of the most used and secure systems for online payments.

4. What if the seller asks me to pay off-platform or pay an additional cost?

We ask that all sales are kept on our platform and use the systems we have in place to complete payment. If a seller requests payment offline, or via a different channel, this is a violation of our policy.

If this happens to you, please let our support team know by contacting support@yourbookstore.co.uk. This helps us to ensure the safety and security of all our buyers and sellers.

5. How do I contact the seller?

At the bottom of each listing there is a link to “Contact Seller” which will allow you to privately message the seller. All conversations between buyers and sellers are stored in your inbox, so you can chat further if needed!

6. Can I sent my purchase back if I am not happy?

You will need to check with the seller if that is something they accept before buying. It is up to each individual seller to make that an option and to explain their terms to you (e.g. postage, refunds, etc.).

7. I have an issue with the condition of my order. How do I get refunded?

Please report an issue with your order by contacting support@yourbookstore.co.uk.

As a seller, please ensure that you list the condition of the book accurately. If an issue is reported by the buyer upon delivery we will contact you on next steps.
